My dog is digging at the doorways when we are gone. Our carpet is destroyed. We have put her on meds for separation anxiety, but it has not helped. What can I do?
I have four dogs (mixed breed rescues). Three of them (2 husky mixes and 1 hound mix) have been digging holes consistently over the last year. Not sure who the instigator is ……. . We have tried cayenne pepper and chicken wire. Cayenne pepper did nothing and when the chicken wire stopped the initial area, they are digging sporadically in many other areas. Any suggestions ?
Wow, you have many ideal but I know my dogs I knew about I try everything.
But, doesn’t work. It wast money.
Yes, smell something ground they dig and took out rats big one still alive. I have wrap up thrown away. It hard walk ground I myself scare I am elderly lady I can get hurt or Breck legs, foot.
Thankyou
I provide daycare for my neighbor’s one and a half year old female Husky she’s been staying with me during the week since she was about 3 months old. I have two dogs that she plays with. They get along great and have a good time. They have a box full of toys. They have ccess to the house any time they are in the yard. I currently have 26 holes in my lawn from this Husky. The holes are small and deep. I can only assume she is after grubs or worms and I can’t see that any of your suggestions will stop this. It is not possible to watch her all the time to catch her in the act for immediate correction. There are a lot of places she can dig with no grass. Yet she prefers the lawn. I don’t know what to do.
I have a Boykin spaniel that just loves to dig. At first when he was a pup bc of anxiety, but now I guess it just transformed into him doing it the time especially when he gets excited. I always tell people that there’s no need to go to the golf course bc we’ve got a 90 hole course here! We’ve tried to hire a trainer before but we don’t have that kind of money so…… I’m definitely going to try some of these new tricks!
Be aware that putting Cayenne on your lawn or garden also affects the wildlife adversely. It burns their skin and causes pain.
We have two dogs now that do nothing but dig. Hopefully they will get over it, but as we have always had two dogs over the last 30 years you can have a nice yard or two dogs but don’t expect both
I have a Toy Aussie, 6 months. She digs hole’s in our back yard, even when we are out there. I tell her No Dig, which worked for a while
Crate them when ur gone
Help tryed everythingcant stop my dog from digging
My Dad stopped his Husky/Shepherd mix from digging by filling the hole up with water and dunking her head in the water. After a few dunkings she quit digging holes.
I just read this – thought oh good I’ll try the pepper.
Did some further research and it can burn your pets paws and nose. I went straight out to water it down. I want to stop my dog digging as it’s a rented property but I don’t want to hurt my dog I would rather pay to fix it can you please remove that from your list. I know it’s partially my fault as I was stupid enough to listen. I am glad I read it could harm my pet before it actually did harm her. Please what ever you do do not use the pepper trick. You may of done a survey on dog owners but it is not enough if you won’t remove the perfect done please put up a warning that it could be potentially dangerous
I have a 1yr old cavalier king Charles spaniel & he started to dig holes in the lawn. What can I use to stop him.
I put tons of citronella oil down and the dogs immediately licked it and one rolled his face into. Ugh now the whole house stinks of citronella because of my goof balls.
This post is so comprehensive OMG – amazing! So many ideas to try out and great advice. Thank you!
My hound digs up interesting smells. I can stop his digging that same place with his poop. He just moves to another spot. I’ve gotten a training collar but he’s clever and has never dug with me watching. It looks like this will take quite a good deal of time and effort.
Thanks for all the tips! I will try the pepper, however Hot English Mustard seems to do the trick. I put a dab on each the pegs to hold down the chicken wire, the dog was pulling the pegs out one by one and then removing the chicken wire… pretty clever but naughty!! Thanks.
Several of these “recommendations” are totally counter to positive, force-free, fear-free training and management. The best way to manage digging is to provide the dog with an appropriate place to manifest that innate behavior. Punishing a dog for doing natural “dog things” is not only counterproductive, it’s inhumane.
In reply to Becky.
Hi Becky,
As mentioned in the article, we have listed the most repeated results in our survey of 500 dogs owners who dig. We agree with you that training is the best option. Unfortunately, the reality is that many people want a more “instant/low effort” solution.
It’s not so much an instant fix but in the real world you can’t be with your dog 24/7 to give positive reinforcements. I have a dig box that my Rough Collie took to immediately. My Golden Retriever is a nightmare! Our backyard looks awful. She can’t be out there alone for a minute!
We have 6 acres where they can dig and they only want to dig by the walkways where people will trip despite there being no difference whatsoever with the plants or dirt or anything. Sometimes you need other ideas, Becky.
My dogs have SIX ACRES to run, play, swim and dig. I have a sand pile, a gravel pile, a blue stone pile pastures and woods. All are fenced in. It’s like a dog park, but they continue to dig my front garden area. There are holes in my lawn that I’ve filled, some holes behind the azaleas along the house in the back yard, but their favs are my front garden. We just weeded and mulched! I’m going to put chicken netting down or chicken wire. After reading this great, comprehensive article, I’m realizing that I did bury my cat 2 years ago, in the front garden where my sweet cat used to lie inder the shrubs and watch birds. The dogs may be smelling that. Can’t dig kitty up at this point. 😔
Turns out our dog likes Cayenne Pepper!
Mine do as well⁉️ Just tried it out on their fave dig-sites…one began to lick and dig and they other rolled in it‼️🤷🏻♂️
Our dog doesn’t mind cayenne pepper either. I will try the vinegar spray as I know she doesn’t like it when misbehaving in the house.
Tried a gallon of red Cheyenne pepper and it didnt do a thing! She must be immune to it! Lol! At the end of my rope! Fixing to get rid of this stupid German shepherd! She won, shes out!
I have to agree with you, I’m having problems with a German shepherd 2yr old an I have tried everything an nothing stops her so I’m going to rehome her, she needs proper family attention, I can’t give it.
This comment makes me sad. A two year old german shepherd can be trained to stop digging. However, you will need the time and care to do it.
I hear ya i feel like getting rid of mines too tired of my yard looking a hot mess
Why did u get a dog if you dont want to what it takes to train him you not only wasted your time but you wasted the dogs also. So if you had a child who wont stop, lets say biting, what will do rehome the child to. People like you should never have any animals let alone children. You are a discrase to all of us responceable pet owners and loving parents. Have a nice day I will knowing that that poor pup is with someone who us a real dog lover
The comment made by Scott is wrong and he should apologize! You know, sometimes having a pet is hard! Everyone goes in with good intentions with getting these pets! I have children, I have grandchildren and we have had many pets! It is not a bad thing to have to
re-home a pet sometimes, if it’s too much and causing stress, then it’s best for both! EX: We adopted a shelter dog years ago, and we went there and met her and everything seemed fine, once we got her home, we let her out and she wouldn’t come back in the house, she growled at my husband and would tear through the house varrelimgbthrougj anyone amd anything! YES, I felt we should return her and we should have! We took her to training, again fine there, once we returned home the same stuff. Ultimately we kept her because my daughter said the same words to us that you said to that poor person! You know what that dog did ALL DAY… Hid in a closet. We tried to play with her, it was a chore to get her to go outside! That wasn’t a good life for her! Our vet recommended we put her down because she must have had high anxiety, we didn’t do that either! I am sure you have thoughts on that!!!! Ultimately my daughter took her with her when she moved out, but she didn’t change still hod in a closet. I feel you shouldn’t tell someone that they are a terrible person and hope they don’t have kids etc! Animals and children ARE NOT THE SAME!!!! YOU don’t know what people are dealing with!
I have to agree with the rehoming idea if it cant be fixed. I have the same problem. Someone dropped off a dog close to my house. If I wouldnt have decided to take her in, she wouldnt have lasted the week. I spent at least a couple hundred dollars to accomodate this dog and now I have a yard full of holes. I am frustrated at this point. Sometimes you have to look at the whole picture before you criticize someone for doing whats best for them or their pet. Maybe they gave it their best shot and its time for both of them to move on.
German Shepherds are NOT STUPID.
Thanks I have the mesh and I will buy the peppers . The problem is field mice
My dog digs to escape the yard. If she is in the yard she is digging along the privacy fence to leave.
For digging to escape I had a hot wire fence along the bottom of my fence. When they get zapped a couple of times they won’t go near the fence
Thank you so much for doing this! I am 12 years old and my Mom and Dad told me if I can get my dog from digging, I can get a puppy and this website was SO helpful. I will definitely try the cayenne pepper but my dog is weird and likes coffee grounds, citrus, and pickle which have a lot of vinegar so there is a likely chance I am not getting this puppy… But thank you again for making this!
Hi Mollie,
I’m glad to hear you found the article helpful. However a lot of these solutions will require help from your parents. For instance, if it’s a medical issue or pest issue, your parents would need to step in here. Maybe you could speak to them and come up with a way to stop the dog digging together?
My bulldog is digging holes everywhere on my property!! She’s trying to get to the CHIPMUNK’S so she just digs in the mulch everywhere to get to them!! I have tried coffee grounds, that’s not working? Please help me!!🙏🙏 I need some help to get her to stop digging holes everywhere and going after the chipmunks!!
Hi Anne Marie,
We covered this in section 21. It sounds like you need to get rid of the chipmunks, since they are the cause of your dog digging.
I only got half way through the 26 “tricks” to stop a dog from digging then I gave up. Stand out there with him and tell him to sit??? Who can stand there with their dog the entire time they’re in the yard that mine especially love to lay around in with the breeze through their fur? Useless. Bury balloons so they’ll pop when the dog’s sharp nails hit them thereby emotionally scarring them for life? No thanks. Bury poop in the spots they love when most dog love multiple spots when that is a whole lot of work and draws FLIES, never mind some dog’s propensity to actually eat poop (especially if they used to live in a kennel at a shelter). Yah, right. Do something about your soft soil that it easy to dig in? What… remove it all and put in hard clay, that BTW dogs can still dig in. Or how about give them a cool place to lay. You mean like INDOORS in the AC? Mine ARE inside 75% of the time. Again, not helpful in the least. Or throw a ball so they are using their energy and are distracted at the same time. People should already be doing that with their dogs if they like toys, I know I do and it makes ZERO difference. So, besides spending another couple of minutes on this comment, I wasted several minutes of my time I’ll never get back. I can’t stand the Internet’s so-called experts who waste everyone’s already short life.
Hi Camellia,
Thanks for the feedback 🙂
This guide was created to help everyone, not just you.
There are so many different solutions because everyone’s lifestyle, yard and dog is different. These are real tips from dog owners that we surveyed – people have found success with using these methods to stop their dog from digging.
Is every single solution on this list going to be right for you?
Probably not.
You should look at your own personal situation and use your best judgment as to which solution will work for you and your dog.
Dogs dig for a wide range of reasons. In order to be comprehensive, we included solutions to all these reasons, such as a dog overheating. It goes without saying that if your dog isn’t hot, then that solution probably isn’t right for you.
You know your dog and your yard best. Do what works for you.
The poop this did work for my dogs but I found it worked better when I burried another dogs poop in the holes. It did not draw any flies as it dries up and if they dig there again I just bury some more. I got plenty. The cyan pepper works really well till it rains of course.
Hi Dorothy,
Thanks for sharing, I’m glad to hear you found success. That’s very interesting that the poop from another dog worked better. Was the poop from another dog you owned? Or was it a neighbors dog? I’m curious to learn more here!
Hi, this was so helpful. Thanks!
thanks! My dog is so much better now. My best friend! Have a great day!
WHAT? You fetched yourself Another dogs feces to bring home to stop your dog digging holes? Omg! Does anybody else see the insanity in that?
You could be bringing back diseases or parasites and potentially giving your fur baby a death sentence killing your dog or at the least making him very sick. What are you people thinking?
Dogs smell each other’s butts Natalie, I’m sure they don’t wipe there butter clean before they go for a walk.
@Camellia My take: you simply do not have time for a dog or to be bothered with the upkeep of one.
I’m not saying it’s a failure on your part but you really need to do your dog a favor and give it to a different home. Maybe one with children who would have a lot of time to spend with it.
Otherwise just take your dog to a trainer, I can’t think of any other free advice that will help you.
Best tip is to get rid of the mutt
I am home with my sheppard lab mix all day and he still diggs up my yard doesnt matter hownlong hes out there. Not really sure what to do but gonna try some of these options and see what helps to get him to stop digging
We run a doggy day care and the poop and pepper work great!!! Also throw in some garlic for the flies they don’t like garlic
In my experience other than the fact that dogs are animals and they do things like digging because they are simply dogs is that the dog is bored. My jasper 1 year old 100lb great Pryenese loves to dig if he is not played with and exercised. He gets bored and if left to his own devices he will dig and chew up anything around. If you get a dog you must have the time to commit to them. Essentially they are a toddler in fur for a very long time and you either have to dog proof your yard or keep an eye on them while in the yard. One should remember this when getting a dog. So many people in this thread just willing to give up and leave their dog which is the most loyal creature you will meet. How about you work with the dog and solve the problem. You wouldn’t just walk away from your child if they didn’t do what you want?
I fixed my dogs digging problem by not keeping her outside all the time. I see no point in having expensive pets and complaining about their natural habits if your going to keep them outside. They are pets not lawn ornaments, bring them inside.
Thank you for this comment. Would I prefer not to have holes in my yard? Sure. But this is a living, breathing being I chose to bring into my home. He is not a thing to be gotten rid of because his behavior is inconvenient, especially since i have some responsibility for it.
Our dog Carly is 58% Great Pyrenees 26% Maremma sheepdog 12% Anatolian Sheperd 3% German Shepherd 1% Golden retriever and is a rescue. We got her when she was about 1 year old and they had her as a lab/mix, then we got her DNA tested and she has no lab in her She is a digger….I take her for a walk twice a day sometimes 3 if my husband walks her. We’ve had her 1 1/2 years and she is an aggressive chewer with toys. We cannot give her anything with cloth on and it has to be hard rubber…I will not give her nylon. Vinegar/water spray works in the house we might have to try it outside. I just think it’ll be an ongoing thing and she will get bored.
You’re being very snarky. There’s a lot of good info in this article. Chicken wire or chicken netting is the way I’m going to go BECAUSE I don’t have the time or patience for training or watching and using a training collar etc.
You have more problems than your dog digging!
