1. A cold, refreshing drink

Bonus Tips:
- Regularly check to see if your dog’s water bowl needs refilling
- Use multiple water bowls if necessary. For example, one inside and one outside
- Place your dog’s water bowl away from direct sunlight to keep the water cool.
2. Use a freezing-cold ice pack

3. Give your hot pup freezable dog toys

4. Find your dog a cool spot to rest

5. Go for a swim

6. Hose down your dog

7. Mist your dog with cold water

8. Create a cool breeze

Does your dog sleep in a wire dog crate? You can aim a fan at the crate to keep your pup cool while he snoozes at night.
It is worth mentioning that fans are less efficient at high humidity levels. On humid days, sweat evaporates more slowly, reducing the cooling effect that a fan offers.[4]
9. Offer your dog a tasty frozen treat

10. Cool your dog with a damp towel

11. Buy your dog special cooling clothes

12. Stay inside

13. Speak to your vet ASAP if you suspect heat stroke

- Heavy panting that is increasing over time
- Dark red or pale gums
- Noticibly agitated
- Drooling
- Vomiting
- Diarrhea
- Uncoordinated movement
- Loss of consciousness
- Laying down unwilling to get up
I found your post most informative.
Sadie is absolutely beautiful. Her dad is a pure breed Irish Setter and her mum is is a pure breed Golden Lab. Oh my, how she looks like both of her parents depending on the season. However, I would like to know where the barking at noises and other people and especially other dogs comes from? Sadie has an extremely dominant personality.. she is extremely loyal, committed and very loving. But, no other dog is allowed near you but her and she is the BOSS around every other dog. Furthermore, do NOT match her up with another female. She is highly intelligent and she knows exactly what you are saying. Especially when she screwed up. She will put herself in jail. The crate or bathroom!
WHAT DO YOU DO WHEN SHE OUT SMARTS YA?
I put a wet child’s tee shirt, preferably brightly coloured, on my dog on hot days, which has the added advantage of making my black dog visible when we’re hiking in the woods.
Thanks for this post!!! What is the best repellent to get my dog to stop peeing on my rug?
Hello all,
Love the article and tips but I feel that there should be an important disclaimer. When trying to cool down a dogs body temperature to prevent heatstroke, using things such as an ice pack or ice cold rag can actually slow down the cooling process when the dogs blood vessels constrict too quickly from the cold causing shock. When trying to avoid actual heat exhaustion it’s always better to use luke warm water along with a cool fan and access to water for the dog. As for a cold rag, again a luke warm rag/pad that is replaced extremely often to avoid trapping heat is safer for those situations. I’m sure all the tips definitely work for refreshing a dog who is just warm, but I thought I would just share the disclaimer so people are aware when dealing with cases of heatstroke 🙂
Hi there – loved reading your page.
I have used a wet towel for years to cool down my lab and danes (Beach towel for the danes 🙂
But this year I found something better. A synthetic or man-made chamois towel – like what they use for drying a car. It is much lighter to deal with when it is wet, much easier to ring out the excess water, so it doesn’t leave a big wet mess on the floor. It dries much quicker when you are finished using it. Easy to clean when needed with a few drops of dish soap then easy to rinse out and dry.
Because it is lighter, it doesn’t bother the dogs, as they hardly know it is there.
I have found it to be a MAJOR improvement over a wet heavy towel.
Lots of good hints to help cool my dog down after an outing in very hot tempertures.
I have been very concerned about my Cavalier King Charles Spaniel when we have been outside on a very hot day.
This article gave me several actions I can take to cool her down safely. I have put toys and blanket in the freezer to use right away.
Thank goodness I know what to do for my dog.
